A gateway to history and the national park
Znojmo is one of the most important settlement complexes in our history. Its strategic importance began to take shape at the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries during the Great Moravian Empire. A key milestone was the year 1030, when Znojmo Castle was founded on a promontory above the Dyje River. In 1226, Přemysl Otakar I elevated the seat to a royal city - the first ever in Moravia.
The city benefits from its location in the fertile Podyjí region. Thanks to the mild climate zone and the absence of industrial emissions, Znojmo offers clean air and stable, pleasant weather all year round. The extraordinary importance of the city is also evidenced by the Rotunda of St. Catherine, the oldest sacral building in the Czech Republic (a national cultural monument since 1962).
Znojmo is an ideal starting point for trips to neighboring Austria. The historic Retz or the thermal baths in Laa an der Thaya are easily accessible by car or bike. The city has excellent train connections to Vienna itself. If you want to explore further South Moravia, Pálava and the Lednice-Valtice area are within easy reach by car.
The Znojmo region offers a wide range of activities for lovers of history, nature and wine.
Vranov nad Dyjí, Bítov, Uherčice chateau, Jevišovice castle or the ruins of Cornštejn, Frejštejn and Nový Hrádek.
The Podyjí National Park attracts visitors with its viewpoints of Králův stolec and Sealsfieldův kámen. On the Austrian side of the border, Hardegg and Schwalbenfelsen are also attractive.
The world-famous Šobes vineyard, the unique Painted Cellar in Šatov and the extensive Znojmo Underground. The region is famous for its hundreds of wine cellars dug into the sandstone.
The local theatre is an architectural gem that resembles the Vienna Opera on a smaller scale.
